Destiny hides in the tempestโ€™s heart

Marine biologist Ondine Ambrose has always felt at home in the sea. Orphaned at birth and raised by her grandmother on Marthaโ€™s Vineyard, she has never questioned her extraordinary affinity for the watery world. Ebony-skinned Marut has the power to control the winds and summon storms โ€“ and to swamp Ondine with uncanny desire. He insists they are more than human, and that she is his fated mate.

Note: This book was previously published by Totally Bound. It has been revised and re-edited for this release.

Ondine sat back from the computer, massaging her aching temples. None of this constituted proof, of course. Cultures frequently borrowed myths from one another, transforming them to fit into their own belief system. Still, the consensus was impressive. Furthermore, her grandmotherโ€™s obvious concern with this particular legend suggested that it had personal relevance.

He would knowโ€”Marut, the engineer. Marut, who so obviously fit the traditional description of ebony-skinned Martewecane.

The slip of paper lay on the table where heโ€™d left it, anchored by the sugar bowl. Swallowing her nervousness, she fished out her phone and entered the number.

โ€œHello. Marut speaking.โ€ His lilting tones were warm as the Caribbean sun.

โ€œAhโ€ฆhello. This is Ondine.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve been waiting for you to call.โ€

โ€œReally? Youโ€™re awfully sure of yourself.โ€

โ€œNot of myself, pititโ€”of us. I knew it was only a matter of time before you began to understand.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t understand! Not anything at all!โ€ She hated the edge of panic she heard in her own voice. โ€œIโ€ฆ We need to talk, Marut.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ve been doing some research, am I right? About yourself and your powers. You know now what you are. What we are.โ€

โ€œYes. No. Oh, I donโ€™t know. Iโ€™ve found the stories, the legends, yes. But they canโ€™t be true. Can they?โ€

โ€œDo you have another explanation?โ€

Ondine couldnโ€™t think of a reply. Closing her eyes, she imagined herself floating upon the night sea, bathed in silvery moonlight. The water buoyed her up, soothed her, and washed away every pain and fear.

โ€œYou need me, sweet. Let me come and comfort you.โ€ The concern in his voice was real, but she heard the lust too, simmering under the surface.

โ€œGiven the effect you have on me, I donโ€™t think โ€˜comfortโ€™ is the right term.โ€

โ€œI wonโ€™t touch you, I swear, not unless you ask me to.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s the problem. Iโ€™m afraid I wonโ€™t be able to resist askingโ€ฆโ€

โ€œAnd why is that a problem, Ondine? Even if you donโ€™t believe the legends? Iโ€™d never hurt you. All I want is to give you pleasure if youโ€™ll just let me.โ€
