Layla Abdullah-Poulos is an alumna of SUNY Empire State College with a Bachelor of Arts in Historical Studies and Literature and is presently a student in the School for Graduate Studies. She expects to complete her studies and receive a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies and Advance Certificates in Women and Gender Studies and American Studies by 2016. An aspiring academic, Abdullah-Poulos uses her knowledge not only to develop her own scholarship but also that of other SUNY Empire State College students. A proponent for the enrichment of higher education through diversity, she plans to continue her work as an educator who conveys to students an ethnically diverse historical awareness and furnish them with the skills necessary to acquire political proficiency and constructively affect societal change.

Can you, for those who don’t know you already, tell something about yourself and how you became an author?

Becoming an author was a very organic experience for me. I started reading at a young age and was always writing short stories as a child. For me, writing was just part of who I was. It wasn’t until my late teenage years that I actually thought I could make a career out of writing. All of those old, unfinished and messy manuscripts were the stepping stones to my goal.

I’m not thrilled about opening up my personal thoughts to the world, but Lyndell is the boss. So, here we go.

Kindness to Animals Inspires My Line of Pet Rescue Romance Books

Each May, the animal welfare organization, American Humane, designates a week in May as Be Kind to Animals Week. I chose May 2020 to release the second book in my contemporary Pet Rescue Romance series, Finding Love at Compassion Ranch, for that reason. 

In the book, I showcase a variety of animals that receive kindness from the primary and secondary human characters. The book is based on a real animal sanctuary found in my state: Kindness Ranch. This rescue organization takes in animals that have been researched on, including sheep, cattle, horses, dogs, and cats. At times, the group also has rabbits, goats, and pigs. Some of the animals that come to Kindness Ranch are adoptable after a time of socialization; others will spend the rest of their lives at the ranch, being loved and cared for in large pastures or buildings that replicate homes. No matter where they live, these animals are given a second chance at life outside a testing facility.

A 60th birthday celebration at my friends’ ranch last month brought me down their ½-mile graveled lane. As I drove toward the house, two large, lanky birds squawked, jumped, and bowed. I smiled, stopped the car, and watched them. Springtime beckons sandhill cranes to this location, and every March when I visit the same spot to celebrate my birthday, the birds are almost always there to welcome me back, just as the land welcomes them.

Writing has always been a solitary journey. Maya Angelou liked to lock herself in a hotel room and allow no one to enter. She said, “I have a bedroom, with a bed, a table, and a bath. I have Roget’s Thesaurus, a dictionary, and the Bible. Usually a deck of cards and some crossword puzzles.” Lately it feels like this is all any of us have. Covid-19 has made our solitary choice, mandatory. This confinement has produced positive and negative side-effects. Effects that we are all learning to manage during this crisis.
