Hey, romance addicts. It’s been a minute since I had the time to review a book, but I have one for you guys!
Art, law enforcement and organized crime, who could want anything more? In Guarding His Midnight Witness, Anna J Stewart offers readers a respectable romantic suspense with the usual suspects and elements layered with stable and quirky characters.

Artist Greta is struggling with a creative block making painting impossible. So what does she do? Why, the only thing possible. Cooped up in a loft with her mind whizzing and creative juices not flowing, she takes to sipping tea, petting her cat and spying the neighborhood. Only thing is, she gets more than what she bargains for when she witnesses a murder, or at least she thinks she saw one. No, she did, right?
No, no, she definitely did. Greta decides that maybe the police should know about the dead guy and makes a quick 911 call.
Hot police detective Jack McTavish strides in page left. Yup, she named her character Jack, and I love her for it! Anyway, in addition to his name, Jack has the usual markings of an alluring suspense leading male, smart, good looking and with just enough tough exterior for a leading lady to chip away. He steps into Greta’s apartment ready to sniff out some shenanigans, but he is struck by her—ahem—art.
Oh yeah, he’s struck. He can’t help but notice her beauty and talent. Only thing is, Greta comes off as a little eccentric … flaky … loopy. When she brings Jack and his partner to a crime scene with no obvious murder, he is a little perplexed.
Despite the lack of a body, he decides to help her out. Hmmm, I wonder why? Whatever his motivations, Jack digs in, determined to sniff out what is happening. If there is a dead person, he’ll find them and the killer, and if he gets to hook up with Greta, that will be a win-win.
Guarding His Midnight Witness ticks off all of the element boxes of a standard story with romance and suspense. I enjoyed Jack and Greta as a couple. She throws him off, one of my faves in romance couple dynamics. There is also a cast of archetypal characters like Jack’s partner, Bowie, loudmouth boss, Lt. Santos and sassy sister Ashley. Round them off with the shifty millionaire and leading suspect, Doyle Fremont, and you have a solid detective story with a touch of steaminess between a couple digging each other.
Readers who like the standard warrior-princess (in this case cop-heiress) romance story will enjoy Guarding His Midnight Witness.
Note: I received an advance reader copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
USA Today and national bestselling author Anna J Stewart can’t remember a time she didn’t have a book in her hands or a story in her head. Early obsessions with Star Wars, Star Trek, and Wonder Woman set her on the path to creating sweet to sexy pulse- pounding romances for her independent heroines. Anna lives in Northern California where she deals with a serious Supernatural addiction and an overly affectionate cat named Snickers.
